European Patent Attorney & Chartered UK Patent Attorney
UPC Authorised Representative
Peter has a master’s degree in Physics from Oxford University, which included a final year project in electronics. He then qualified and practiced as a European and UK patent attorney at a large London patent & trademark firm. Here he gained valuable experience in varied fields from excluded subject matter objections and patent eligibility for financial trading platforms to university spin outs and technology transfer.
Peter then spent eight years working as an in-house patent attorney for a major multinational networking and mobile telecommunications company. There, Peter handled tasks across the full range of the patent lifecycle, including invention mining, patent drafting and prosecution. He was also instrumental in cross license negotiations and litigation, with successful enforcement of patents during negotiations across multiple jurisdictions.
With substantial experience in drafting and prosecuting telecommunications standards IP over the years spanning 3G to 5G, Peter has prepared many standard essential patents (SEPs), standards mapping claim charts and implementation claim charts. His SEP experience has also extended into IPTV (internet protocol TV) and video codecs.
Peter’s extensive work in the communications field has transcended into other sectors, where he has supported clients over the past 20 years in defence, cyber security, encryption, semiconductors, and many other electronic and mechanical based technological areas.
Peter joined Openshaw & Co in 2018 and is part of our management team, providing hands on and strategic IP stewardship for our major multinational clients. He possesses exceptional communication skills and an ability to engage with all levels of an organisation. His acute attention to detail results in a defendable patent with a commercially useful claim scope.
He is intimately familiar with the latest telecommunication technologies, with significant and ongoing experience surrounding 6G innovations, audio and video coding, IoT and innovation relating to autonomous vehicle, vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communications, smart roads, and 3GPP vehicle to everything (V2X).
In addition to patent drafting and prosecution, Peter undertakes oppositions and enforcement, with experience of successful defence against invalidation proceedings in territories including China. He frequently represents clients at the EPO with oral proceedings.
Peter sat on the EPI council electoral committee for three elections between 2016 to 2022 and continues to act, on occasion, as a representative on electoral objections committees for the EPI.
