Following university, Andrew began his career working in defence and security as a scientist, conducting research and development of cutting-edge innovation at various levels of security classification. During this time, Andrew was able to demonstrate a deep understanding of subject matter and applied his mathematical skills in areas such as the application of Bayesian networks in relation to unmanned vehicles, and the application of neural networks.

In 2008, Andrew decided to pursue a career as a patent attorney and joined Paul Openshaw at Openshaw & Co, where he trained and obtained his patent attorney qualifications. Andrew has gained extensive experience in fields as diverse as consumer electronics, telecommunications, aerospace, computer-implemented inventions, machine tools, specialist pumps, and packaging.

Working alongside Paul, Andrew has actively helped nurture and grow Openshaw & Co to where we are today, supporting a wide range of clients in varied fields exploit the full potential of their IP.

Today, as well as his role as Managing Director, Andrew continues to provide his extensive experience and knowledge to our clients, advising on everything from long term strategic IP asset management to short term tactical delivery.

Thanks to the applied mathematical areas he specialised in during his Masters degree and his initial R&D role, Andrew is ideally placed to provide highly analytical patent drafting and prosecution to clients. This expertise and thinking also transfers extremely well to other technical areas, including mechanical engineering, semiconductors, computing, transport, energy, and medical device technologies.
