Dominic Clacy

European Patent Attorney & Chartered UK Patent Attorney
UPC Authorised Representative
Following graduation, Dominic spent seven years working as a physicist in governmental research and development in areas such as electro-optics, lasers, displays, scene simulation, guidance, sensor systems, and information analysis. Following this, Dominic joined an in-house intellectual property department for a high-profile Defence and Security research organisation, where he gained his Chartered UK Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney qualifications, also becoming an intellectual property business partner with experience working with the UK Space Agency.

Dominic has significant experience in patent drafting and prosecution, and he is familiar with communications, optical, antenna, sensing, image processing, body-worn systems, and electronics technologies, including electronic warfare and cybersecurity, in addition to mechanical and computer-implemented inventions.

With first-hand experience in the cutting edge of the Defence and Security field, including managing intellectual property up to and including classified status, Dominic is highly adept at translating how intellectual property can effectively enable business strategy, managing technology transfer through to licensing and value realisation.

In parallel with his Defence and Security expertise, Dominic has developed a strong practice in the energy sector, particularly in power systems, renewable energy technologies, and high-voltage direct current (HVDC)transmission — experience that translates well to oil and gas and other industrial applications.

Having joined Openshaw & Co. in 2022, Dominic has also been instrumental in assisting our clients in successful patent registration across a wide variety of sectors, including telecommunications, wireless technologies, aerospace, video processing, power conversion and transmission technologies, to name but a few.

Dominic has also played a key role working with several notable UK universities, helping secure grant funding, and supporting their Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) with knowledge exchange and commercialisation, helping review and implement practices, processes, and delivering highly regarded training across their estates to multiple audiences.  Dominic’s extensive IP and commercialisation experience has also made a valuable contribution to the development of a Deal Readiness Toolkit, endorsed by top UK universities, and is currently being utilised to support their start-ups and spinouts.
